Regarded as one of the largest and most powerful predators to have ever lived, fossil remains of megalodon suggest that this giant shark reached a maximum length of 18 meters (59 ft) with the average size being 10.5 meters (34 ft).

The teeth of theses sharks are gigantic triangular fossil teeth often found embedded in rocky formations. They were once believed to be the petrified tongues, or glossopetrae, of dragons and snakes. Nicholas Steno corrected the interpretation in 1667, when he recognized them as shark teeth, and famously produced a depiction of a shark's head bearing such teeth. Swiss naturalist Louis Agassiz gave this shark its scientific name, Carcharodon megalodon, in 1843 in Recherches sur les poissons fossiles.

The background of this quilt is a modified and enlarged version of the town square quilt featured on the Midnight Quilt Show.  The Appliqued sharks are an original design.  They are done as fusible web applique on to a featherweight stabilizer then they are cut out and fused to the quilt top.
