Neptune's Sea

Based on the Roman Mosaics in the Baths of Neptune, Osita Antica Italy

In 2012, I went to to Italy on a Roman history tour.  I fell in love with these high contrast mosaics.  They were all the rage in the first century A.D.  They were used as a status symbol.  In a public building, the artists went all out and made custom mosaics.  In a private villa, you could order a custom mosaic if you were wealthy or you could order from a set list of designs if you were less wealthy.  The two color mosaics were used on floors even after the artists starting using the multi-colored mosaics on the walls.

I first tried this concept as fusible web applique but it limited how small my pieces could be and still maintain fabric stability. My Neptune's Seat Triptych was done with fusible web.  With this quilt, I took the images I drew for the triptych and digitized them and drew a whole bunch more and designed custom printed fabric with my designs on them.
